There are no restrictions to the number of people involved in the talent. Music must be recorded as Track 1 of a flash drive, Music must be turned in at registration. Please always bring a back-up copy! All props are allowed and must be brought up and removed when contestants enter and leave the stage. Judging of talent will allow up to 50 points awarded per judge with sub-categories of:
**Entertainment Value **Production Quality **Lip Sync/Live Presentation **Stage Presence
TALENT MUSIC – The flash drive should have your talent # as Track 1, and a crowning # as Track 2.
Tips:
Judging is comparative so all talents are ranked. A ‘very good’ or ‘clean’ talent is nice but how will it compare to others? Anticipate heavy competition!
Always remain THE STAR of any production number talent. Back-up needs to know this as well! Dancers should be fairly even in skills & they are not competing against each other.
Know your words! Practice the number and your timing so you are on beat and the flow is right. You are responsible that back-up know their parts as well.
Stay OFF of the judges’ table! Judges might smile at this but they do not like it at all.
Presentation
This is a presentation of the contestants based on the theme of the National Pageant. This category is non-judged but the best presentation costume wins a cash prize at the end of the night. Be creative and as flashy as you like!
Interview
The judges will interview each contestant individually for five (5) minutes. The purpose of interview is to allow the judges some insight into the character of each contestant. During the interviewthe judges are afforded the opportunity to evaluate each contestant in qualities such as intelligence, communication, attitude, plan of action during their reign. Interview is intended to be professional and suggested attire is professional business attire. Miss divisions contestants can interview in male or female attire. Judging of interview will be collective and will allow up to 50 points awarded per judge with the sub-categories of:
*Content of Answer*Eye Contact / Posture*Overall Appearance
Tips:
Remember to shake each judge’s hand upon entering the Interview and stand until you are asked to be seated by the head judge.
Interview is only 5 minutes so do not give a 4 ½ minute introduction. Practice a 30 second ‘bio’ giving your name, stage name (if different), where you live, title representing, how long you have been performing, and employment outside of entertaining. The rest of the information will come out during interview.
Answer the question! If asked to give negative aspects or qualities about yourself then give the judges an honest answer, BUT follow-up on how you are working towards improving the negatives. This is a way to answer the question and end up with a positive about your learning experiences. Not knowing your negative qualities indicate lack of growth; you cannot fix what you do not know is broken.
Do not pull your chair up to sit right on top of the judges’ table unless there is a good reason to do so (i.e. hearing problems). Most judges do not like when a contestant moves the seat, although you might get away without point deductions.
Have a clear understanding of what you plan to do with the title! How do you plan to promote the system in a positive way; what tools do you need; how will you garner interest in selling preliminaries and increasing contestant numbers.
PRACTICE! Hold mock interviews with friends in the industry and ask them for brutally honest feedback.
Evening Gown – (Miss divisions Only)
The Evening Gown competition is the most elegant category of the competition. The modeling should be slower and the judges are looking for a classy and sophisticated overall look. The gowns can be of any style or season, but must be full-length. Hair and accessories should complement the presentation of the evening gown. Please be sure that your gown is clean, wrinkle-free, and also free of strings and make-up stains. Judging of Evening Gown will be comparative and allow up to 25 points per judge with the following sub-categories considered:
* Fit/Length/Style* Modeling* Stage Presence* Hair & Make-up*Accessories* Overall Presentation
Tips:
Buy a flashlight and give it to your dresser. Before you go on-stage have them shine it on you to look for little (or big) strings, make-up, hem or lining coming apart.
Wear hair that is appropriate for Evening Gown and that compliments your attire. Remember to keep the hair neat! The Spotlight can be brutal!!
Formal Wear (Mr. division Only)
The main requirement is to wear contemporary formal wear that is clean and that fits. Color and comfort will be a great start, and after that the sky is the limit. Stone, accessorize, and add whatever touches you like, but it is not necessary. The selection should be a contemporary fashion of your creation that would be functional and could be worn to a formal event. The fit makes the fashion! Judging of Formal Wear will be comparative and allow up to 25 points per judge with the following sub-categories considered:
* Fit / Suitability * Stage Presence * Modeling * Hair Style * Outfit Accessories
Tips:
Make sure it fits! Sleeves, pants, waist, neck, etc. Have the formal wear fitted to your body
Stay away from costuming or period pieces! Remember it is at the core a formal wear.
Find colors that work for you. Trust your instincts and remember that this is comparative judging.
